The History of University of Texas at Austin

Although the idea of a public university in Texas was bandied about as early as 1827, the University of Texas at Austin (UT) did not open its doors to students until 1883. Disagreements over money and land, and then the Civil War, all contributed to the delay. The original Victorian main building was razed in the 1930s to make more room, and today is the site of the campus’ iconic tower. Considered a Public Ivy League, the university has grown from a single building, eight teachers, two departments, and 221 students to a 350-acre main campus with 21,000 faculty and staff, 16 colleges and schools, and almost 50,000 students.
